Winter Detox and Cleanse
By Alice Laidlaw (Naturopath)
Have you been feeling tired and sluggish or even noticed changes in your skin this Winter? It may be time for a detox!
Detoxification occurs naturally in the body however, overtime we are exposed to toxins on a daily basis through the air we breathe, toxins in the home, skin care products or office and the food we eat causing our elimination organs to become overburdened.
This causes excess toxins circulating in the body leaving us looking and feeling sluggish!
Our liver is the primary site of detoxification and elimination with other eliminatory organs including our skin, kidneys, bowels and lungs also playing a role in the removal of toxins. In order for our liver and other eliminatory organs to work efficiently they need to be supported and nourished with nutrients, lifestyle changes and a reduction in the exposure to toxins.
What are some signs that the body may need to detox?
- Digestive issues such as bloating and constipation
- Feeling sluggish and fatigued/lethargic
- Skin issues including acne and dull tired skin
- Bad breath or nausea
- Difficulty concentrating and poor memory – ‘foggy head’
- Sore and inflamed joints
- Poor immunity
- Muscle pain or weakness
- Hormonal issues such as PMS
Factors that can contribute to liver overload:
- Alcohol and caffeine
- Nutrient insufficiencies
- Poor gut health
- Excess fatty foods and junk foods
- Excess refined sugar (lollies, chocolate, soft drink)
- Chemicals and pesticides on non-organic foods
- Topical chemicals from cosmetic care
- Exposure to heavy metals
- Inhaled toxins
- Stress and anxiety (stress hormones)
- Environmental pollutants
Why should we detox?
Toxins are not only in the foods and drinks we eat but they are also found in our cosmetic care, house cleaning products, gardening sprays and fumes from traffic. These are external toxins. In addition to this we can also make toxins internally. Internal toxins come from unhealthy bacteria and yeast, viral infections, stress and anxiety and negative self-talk. We are exposed to internal and external toxins on a daily basis and overtime this can cause strain on our liver and other eliminatory organs.
Benefits of doing a detox:
At the beginning of a detox we may feel tired and a little under the weather but once this stage passes we can look forward to feeling the following:
- Increased physical and mental energy
- Improved sleep
- Healthier skin and hair
- More motivated and productive!
