Migraine & Headache Triggers

Finding the source and cause of headaches and migraines can be tricky as there are a long list of possible triggers! Our Naturopath Steph has given you a bit of a checklist below, of triggers we often see in the clinic. 1. Dietary triggers: Skipping meals / fasting, sensitivity to specific foods, food allergies or intolerances, sugar consumption, alcohol, dehydration

2. Medications: Overuse of pain medication or missed doses of usual medications may trigger headaches such as the contraceptive pill or antidepressants, side effects from other prescribed medicine

3. Changes in sleep patterns: Napping, oversleeping, lack of sleep, jet lag

4. Hormonal fluctuations: Menstrual cycles, ovulation, contraceptive pill, hormone-replacement therapy, peri-menopause

5. Environmental: Weather and temperature changes, bright lights, odours / pollution, hay fever, or factors such as air travel or high altitude

6. Stress: Periods of high stress, accumulated stress, reacting easily to stress, repressed emotions, long work hours

7. Stress let down: Weekends, vacations, ending a stressful task or project

8. Physical: Over exertion, injuries, visual triggers (eye strain, computer screens)

9. Dehydration: Low water intake, high caffeine, fluid loss such as diarrhoea or vomiting

20. Musculoskeletal: Neck or shoulder tension, referred pain, posture
